What is the meaning of tawaf?
Tawaf is one of the basic steps or rituals of Muslims pilgrimage in Mecca, located in Hejaz, Saudi Arabia. In Arabic language Tawaf means going round and round. How tawaf is performed?
A tawaf is performed by moving around Kaaba (the black cube) Seven times in counter clockwise direction. It is one of the basic rituals of Islamic pilgrimage in Mecca.
The Seven rounds of Tawaf have been divided into two parts for male pilgrims only. In first part pilgrims will move three times with hurried pace in outer part of the crowd called as Ramal while in remaining four rounds he will move closer to Kaaba at leisurely pace.
How many Tawaf are there in Hajj?
Total there are Seven Tawaf in Hajj. Three at hurried pace in outer part of the crowd while four at ease in inner part, close to Kaaba.
Where does tawaf start?
Tawaf is started by kissing Hijr-e-Aswad (the Black Stone). If due to crowd kissing is not possible then pilgrims should touch it and then kiss hand and if this is also not possible then pilgrims should raise hand towards the stone and then start tawaf. In last case kissing is not necessary.
How long is the tawaf?
The length of Tawaf can varies depending upon crowd. It can range from 1.4 Kilo Meter to 4.1 Kilo Meters.
